Shadow and Bone

In the war-torn nation of Ravka, orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov discovers she possesses an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. When her regiment is attacked while crossing the Shadow Fold—a swath of unnatural darkness teeming with flesh-eating monsters that divides the kingdom—Alina unleashes a dormant magic she never knew she had. Suddenly thrust into the lavish world of the magical elite known as Grisha, she must leave behind her best friend and the only life she's ever known to train with the mysterious Darkling, who intends to use her gifts to destroy the Fold forever. This series opener blends Russian-inspired fantasy with a compelling coming-of-age story, exploring themes of power, identity, and belonging. Bardugo crafts an intricate magic system where abilities are categorized into orders, creating a rich world where those with power are both revered and feared. The novel balances political intrigue with personal stakes as Alina navigates court politics, discovers the true extent of her abilities, and questions whom she can trust. With its morally complex characters, slow-burn romance, and atmospheric world-building, Shadow and Bone appeals to readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy with darker undertones and cultures inspired by Eastern European folklore.
