A Head Full of Ghosts

When fourteen-year-old Marjorie Barrett begins experiencing disturbing episodes that might be schizophrenia—or possibly demonic possession—her desperate family makes a fateful decision that will haunt them forever. In an attempt to pay for her treatment and perhaps find a solution, they agree to let a reality TV production crew document their ordeal, turning private tragedy into public spectacle. The story unfolds through multiple perspectives and timelines, as Marjorie's younger sister Meredith looks back on these events years later while being interviewed for a book about what really happened. Tremblay crafts a deeply unsettling exploration of mental illness, family dynamics under extreme pressure, and the way media can exploit and distort reality. The novel brilliantly keeps readers guessing about the true nature of Marjorie's condition, refusing to provide easy answers about whether supernatural forces are at work or if something more scientifically explainable is occurring. This ambiguity becomes one of the book's greatest strengths, as it examines how interpretation shapes reality and how desperation can make people believe—or perform—almost anything. What makes this novel particularly compelling is its meta-textual approach, incorporating blog posts that analyze the reality show episodes and exploring how pop culture influences our understanding of possession and horror. It's a smart, literary take on the possession story that will appeal to readers who appreciate psychological complexity, unreliable narration, and horror that lingers in moral ambiguity rather than clear-cut scares.
