Mogworld

Mogworld is a darkly comedic fantasy novel that flips the typical hero's journey on its head. Jim, a deceased wizard's student, finds himself forcibly resurrected as a zombie in a world that operates suspiciously like a massively multiplayer online role-playing game—because it is one. Unlike the living adventurers who gleefully quest for glory and loot, Jim wants nothing more than to finally rest in peace. Unfortunately, true death proves frustratingly difficult to achieve in a world where resurrection is commonplace and immortal players respawn endlessly. What follows is a wildly satirical adventure as Jim navigates a realm populated by mindless player-characters, exploitative NPCs, and game mechanics that make less sense the closer you examine them. Yahtzee Croshaw, known for his acerbic video game reviews, brings sharp wit and insider knowledge to this clever deconstruction of MMO tropes and gaming culture. The novel explores themes of existential purpose, the nature of reality, and what it means to be truly alive—all while delivering laugh-out-loud humor and increasingly absurd situations. This book will particularly appeal to gamers who've spent time in World of Warcraft or similar MMOs, as the humor draws heavily from recognizable gaming frustrations and conventions. However, its engaging protagonist, fast-paced plot, and philosophical underpinnings make it accessible even to readers unfamiliar with gaming culture.
