The Luminous Dead

The Luminous Dead is a claustrophobic science fiction thriller that follows Gyre Price, a desperate caver who lies her way into an extremely dangerous underground expedition on an alien planet. Poorly trained and financially desperate, she's equipped with a high-tech suit controlled remotely by her handler, Em, who monitors her every move through the helmet camera and vital signs. What should be a straightforward cave mapping job quickly becomes a nightmare as Gyre descends deeper into the dark, discovering that Em has been withholding critical information about previous expeditions and the true nature of what lurks in the depths. This debut novel excels as both a tense survival story and an intimate psychological study of trust and manipulation. The relationship between Gyre and Em evolves in fascinating ways as isolation, fear, and mutual dependence blur the lines between ally and adversary. Starling masterfully explores themes of class exploitation, the cost of survival, and whether connection can exist when built on deception. The cave itself becomes a character—hostile, disorienting, and filled with mysterious phenomena that keep readers guessing about what's real and what might be hallucination. The book will appeal to readers who enjoy their science fiction dark, intense, and character-driven. Its stripped-down cast and single-location setting create an almost unbearable tension that never lets up, making it perfect for fans of psychological thrillers, survival horror, and stories that examine human nature under extreme pressure.
