Leaving Time

Thirteen-year-old Jenna Metcalf has spent the last decade searching for her mother, Alice, a scientist who disappeared from an elephant sanctuary under mysterious circumstances when Jenna was only three. Armed with her mother's old journals about elephant behavior and grief, Jenna recruits an unlikely pair of allies: Serenity Jones, a once-famous psychic who has lost her gift, and Virgil Stanhope, a washed-up detective with his own troubled past. Together, this unconventional trio reopens the cold case that authorities long ago abandoned, piecing together what really happened the night a sanctuary employee was trampled to death and Alice vanished without a trace. At its heart, this novel explores the profound bonds between mothers and daughters, the nature of grief, and how both humans and elephants cope with devastating loss. Picoult weaves fascinating research about elephant intelligence, memory, and mourning throughout the narrative, creating rich parallels between animal and human behavior. The story moves between past and present, gradually revealing the complex relationships and secrets surrounding the sanctuary while examining themes of loyalty, memory, and the lengths we go to protect those we love. What makes this book particularly compelling is Picoult's signature twist ending that reframes everything readers thought they knew about the story. The elephant research adds depth and poignancy, while the mystery keeps pages turning. It's an emotional journey that will appeal to fans of family dramas, psychological mysteries, and anyone interested in the surprising similarities between human and animal consciousness.
