Classic Writings in Anarchist Criminology

Classic Writings in Anarchist Criminology brings together foundational and contemporary texts that challenge conventional approaches to crime, punishment, and justice through an anarchist lens. This collection examines how state power, capitalism, and hierarchical social structures create and perpetuate what society defines as "crime," while simultaneously exploring alternatives to punitive criminal justice systems. The anthology features works from influential thinkers who question the legitimacy of state authority to define criminality and argue for transformative approaches rooted in mutual aid, community accountability, and restorative practices. The book explores themes of abolition, prison critique, police power, and the criminalization of dissent, while presenting anarchist perspectives on building horizontal, non-coercive forms of social organization. It challenges readers to reconsider fundamental assumptions about law and order, asking whether our current systems truly serve justice or primarily protect existing power structures. The collection is particularly valuable for its historical range, connecting classical anarchist thought with contemporary movements for prison abolition and transformative justice. This anthology appeals to students and scholars in criminology, political theory, and social justice studies, as well as activists seeking theoretical grounding for abolition and prison reform movements. It offers both a critique of existing institutions and a vision for radical alternatives, making it essential reading for anyone interested in understanding crime and justice outside the framework of state authority.
