Slewfoot

In 1666 Connecticut, Abitha, a young woman trapped in a loveless Puritan marriage, finds her already difficult life spiraling into darkness when her husband is killed under mysterious circumstances. Desperate and alone, she stumbles upon an ancient spirit awakening in the forest—a creature of immense power who has forgotten his own name and nature. As the two form an unlikely alliance, Abitha discovers abilities within herself that the rigid Puritan community would condemn as witchcraft, while the forest creature begins to remember fragments of his true identity and the old magic that once ruled the land. Brom weaves together historical fiction and dark fantasy, exploring themes of religious oppression, female autonomy, and the clash between old pagan beliefs and colonial Christianity. The novel delves into the real persecution women faced during early American history while adding supernatural elements drawn from folklore and mythology. With its vividly rendered colonial New England setting and morally complex characters, the story examines what it means to reclaim power in the face of systemic cruelty and whether vengeance can ever truly bring justice. This tale will appeal to readers who enjoy atmospheric historical horror with folkloric roots, strong character development, and lush prose. Brom's signature dark illustrations accompany the text, enhancing the Gothic mood. Fans of literary horror that doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of its historical period while embracing mythic storytelling will find much to appreciate in this haunting narrative.
