Gök-Türkler I-II-III

The Gök-Türkler trilogy by Ahmet Tasagil offers a comprehensive historical examination of the Göktürk Empire, one of the most significant Turkic states in Central Asian history. Spanning from the sixth to eighth centuries CE, this work explores the rise, expansion, and eventual decline of the Göktürks, who established the first great Turkic empire and left an indelible mark on Eurasian history. Tasagil, a respected Turkish historian specializing in Central Asian and Turkic history, draws on archaeological evidence, Chinese sources, and Orkhon inscriptions to reconstruct the political, military, and cultural achievements of this nomadic confederation. The trilogy delves into the Göktürks' sophisticated state organization, their military prowess, and their complex diplomatic relations with neighboring powers including China, Persia, and Byzantium. Tasagil examines how the Göktürks managed to control the Silk Road, their unique runic writing system, and their shamanistic religious traditions that would influence Turkic peoples for centuries. The work also explores the internal dynamics that led to the empire's division into Eastern and Western khanates and their eventual collapse. This comprehensive study appeals to readers interested in Central Asian history, the formation of Turkic identity, and the often-overlooked empires that shaped medieval Eurasia. Tasagil's scholarly yet accessible approach makes complex historical developments understandable while highlighting the Göktürks' crucial role in connecting East and West, and their lasting legacy on subsequent Turkic states and cultures.
