About Fourth Wing
AI-generatedIn a world where dragons rule the skies and only the strongest survive, twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to live a quiet life as a scribe, chronicling the history of her war-torn kingdom. Instead, her commanding general mother orders her into Basgiath War College—the brutal training ground for dragon riders where many cadets don't make it past the first year. With a fragile body that seems ill-suited for the physical demands of rider training, Violet must rely on her sharp mind and determination to survive the deadly challenges, cutthroat competition, and the ever-present threat of dragons who may choose to bond with her—or incinerate her on the spot. Rebecca Yarros crafts an addictive romantasy that combines high-stakes dragon rider training with smoldering tension and genuine danger. The story explores themes of resilience, the burden of family expectations, and finding strength in unexpected places. Violet's compelling voice and her contentious relationship with the darkly attractive Xaden Riorson create an enemies-to-lovers dynamic that crackles with intensity, while the richly imagined world and its military academy setting deliver both brutal trials and genuine camaraderie. Fourth Wing appeals to readers who love fierce heroines, morally complex love interests, and fantasy worlds where dragons are as dangerous as they are magnificent—all wrapped up in a page-turning adventure that's nearly impossible to put down.

Yup, worth the hype. Missed an entire night's sleep reading it. I think it's better in written format, but I've also listened to it twice this week, so. And the main character has a disability. Her surviving is absolutely part of the fantasy, but it warmed my disabled heart to see a lead character in a fantasy book who isn't physically strong and to see medical attention given to and accommodations made for her.

Used audible to listen to this story. you can tell a lot of the inspiration for this world and how things work but there is an excellent mix of fantasy, romance and lore. I especially appreciate the authors use of Violets neurosis to do world building: every time she is stressed she recounts the history of the world. Thus as she learns more about her worlds present so too does the reader. I cannot emphasize enough how great the reader is for audible having multifaceted conversations with ranges of voices and emotions. she is especially skilled in having an old curmudgeon dragon interact with our heroine and it feels seemless.
