The Frozen River

Based on the true story of America's first female coroner, "The Frozen River" brings to life Martha Ballard, a midwife in 1789 Maine who finds herself at the center of a brutal crime. When a man is discovered dead in the frozen Kennebec River and a local judge stands accused of rape, Martha becomes one of the few people willing to seek justice in a community where powerful men protect their own. Drawing from Ballard's actual diary entries, the novel weaves together her work delivering babies, treating the sick, and documenting the intimate details of her neighbors' lives with a gripping mystery that threatens to tear the settlement apart. Lawhon masterfully captures the harsh realities of frontier life while exploring themes of female resilience, the power dynamics between men and women, and the quiet courage required to speak truth in the face of injustice. Martha emerges as a fascinating protagonist—a woman who wields authority through her medical knowledge and moral conviction in an era when women had few legal rights. The novel excels at depicting the vital but often invisible work of women in early America, from midwifery to running households, while maintaining the tension of a compelling mystery. What makes this book particularly appealing is its basis in historical fact combined with Lawhon's vivid storytelling. Readers interested in early American history, strong female characters, and atmospheric historical mysteries will find much to appreciate in this tale of one woman's determination to see justice served, regardless of the personal cost.
