The list

The List is a sharp, provocative thriller that explores the collision of social media justice, relationships, and reputation in the digital age. When Ola Olajide discovers her fiancé Mícheál's name on an anonymous online list of sexual abusers, her seemingly perfect life implodes just days before their wedding. The novel alternates between past and present, unraveling the story of their relationship while Ola grapples with an impossible question: does she believe the list, or does she believe the man she thought she knew? Adegoke tackles urgent contemporary themes including cancel culture, accountability, trust, and the complexities of believing women while questioning mob justice. The novel examines how social media has transformed the landscape of allegations and public judgment, asking difficult questions about due process, truth, and the presumption of innocence in an era where reputations can be destroyed instantly and anonymously. It also probes the fraught dynamics of a modern relationship under extreme pressure. What makes this debut particularly compelling is its refusal to provide easy answers or take predictable sides. Adegoke writes with nuance about morally murky territory, creating genuine suspense as readers, like Ola, oscillate between certainty and doubt. The novel will resonate especially with readers interested in feminist discourse, the #MeToo movement's impact and complications, and anyone who appreciates character-driven stories that interrogate contemporary cultural tensions with intelligence and urgency.
