Thinking Machine

In "The Thinking Machine," journalist Stephen Witt delivers a gripping chronicle of NVIDIA's transformation from a scrappy startup into the powerhouse behind the artificial intelligence revolution. Through meticulous reporting and access to key players, Witt traces the company's journey from its founding in the 1990s through its emergence as the primary supplier of the sophisticated chips that make modern AI possible. The book offers readers an inside look at the technical innovations, strategic decisions, and occasional strokes of luck that positioned NVIDIA at the center of one of the most consequential technological shifts of our time. Beyond a corporate biography, this is a story about how specialized hardware became the foundation of the AI boom, raising profound questions about technological infrastructure, economic power, and global competition. Witt explores the implications of a single company's dominance in supplying the "picks and shovels" of the AI gold rush, examining everything from chip design breakthroughs to supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical tensions. The narrative illuminates why these integrated circuits matter so much and what their concentration in one company's hands means for innovation, competition, and the future of technology. What makes this book particularly compelling is Witt's ability to make complex technical subjects accessible while maintaining the pace of a business thriller. It's essential reading for anyone seeking to understand not just how AI works, but who controls the infrastructure making it possible and why that matters for our technological and economic future.
