About The Secret History
AI-generatedAt an elite Vermont college, a close-knit group of classics students falls under the spell of their charismatic professor, Julian Morrow. Narrator Richard Papen arrives as an outsider desperate to belong, and is drawn into the exclusive circle of brilliant, wealthy students who study Ancient Greek in isolation from the rest of campus. What begins as an intoxicating immersion in classical literature and philosophy takes a dark turn when the group's pursuit of transcendent experience leads them to commit an unthinkable act. Tartt's debut novel is a reverse mystery that reveals the murder in its opening pages, then explores the psychological unraveling and moral consequences that follow. The book examines themes of beauty and terror, the seductive danger of elitism, and the price of trying to live according to ancient ideals in the modern world. With its atmospheric New England setting and richly drawn characters, the novel captures both the intellectual intensity of college life and the devastating loss of innocence. The gorgeous prose and careful psychological observation make this literary thriller compelling for readers who appreciate character-driven stories that probe the darker aspects of human nature and the complexities of loyalty, guilt, and obsession.

This was my second read and my god is this a phenomenal book. In some ways I enjoyed the reread more than my first read. It is so well crafted. Also sad that this overwrote my first review :(
