Dungeon Crawler Carl

Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat Princess Donut find themselves trapped when Earth is suddenly transformed into a deadly intergalactic dungeon crawl—a brutal game show broadcast across the universe. With humanity given a mere few hours' warning before their world is destroyed and rebuilt as an eighteen-level death trap, Carl must navigate increasingly dangerous floors filled with monsters, traps, and bizarre challenges while billions of alien viewers watch their struggle for survival. Armed with game-like stats, skills, and loot drops, he and Princess Donut (now his unexpectedly capable companion) must descend deeper into the dungeon where the rules are deadly, the odds are stacked against them, and only a handful of humans can possibly reach the bottom alive. This darkly comedic LitRPG adventure blends video game mechanics with genuine emotional stakes and surprising depth. Dinniman crafts a story that's simultaneously hilarious and horrifying, featuring sharp social commentary about reality television, exploitation, and human resilience wrapped in addictive dungeon-crawling action. What sets it apart is its masterful balance of absurdist humor—including a princess-obsessed cat earning sponsored loot and Carl's deadpan commentary on the apocalypse—with genuinely touching character development and creative world-building. The game mechanics are crunchy enough to satisfy RPG enthusiasts while never bogging down the breakneck pacing, making this a compulsively readable entry in the genre that transcends its niche appeal.
