Anita Blake, vampire executioner and supernatural investigator, is pulled away from her life in St. Louis when Edward—the most dangerous assassin she knows—calls for help in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Someone or something is committing brutal mutilation murders that even Edward can't handle alone, and the kills bear the marks of a creature unlike anything Anita has encountered before. As the body count rises, she must navigate unfamiliar territory both literally and figuratively, working alongside Edward while confronting monsters that challenge everything she thought she knew about the supernatural world. This installment in the Anita Blake series marks a departure from the familiar St. Louis setting, plunging readers into the Southwestern desert where ancient powers and new threats converge. Hamilton weaves together elements of police procedural, supernatural horror, and dark urban fantasy while exploring themes of loyalty, the nature of monstrosity, and the psychological toll of violence. The book deepens Edward's character and his complicated friendship with Anita, offering fans a fresh perspective on both. What makes this entry particularly compelling is its focus on an intense murder investigation and the partnership between two of the series' most formidable characters. The gruesome crime scenes and mysterious antagonist create genuine suspense, while the New Mexico setting adds atmospheric richness. Fans of the series will appreciate seeing Anita outside her comfort zone, forced to rely on her skills and instincts without her usual support system.
