I have a lot of thoughts when it comes to my experience reading Huck Finn. I do think some parts very obviously acted as only 'connecters' between major plot points. It was within these connecter scenes I found myself becoming bored and sleepy. My interest peaked when Huck would become introspective or once I realized a newly introduced character would actually be around for a while. I read this immediately after finishing Tom Sawyer, and I think this book was more culturally significant than the former (just as I had expected). I admire Mark Twain's ability to build characters through consistent dialect. Although in my own head it was not a difficult book to think about, I can see why reading this book in school or in book clubs is so important -- it will inevitably teach people how to have difficult conversations on less frequented topics. Overall I think the book had some clutter and could've been made shorter without losing effectiveness. Despite this, Twain has sculpted both likeable and unlikeable characters in detail, arguably the most important aspect of any fiction story.
