In this ambitious science fiction novel, the second installment of John Varley's Gaea Trilogy, humanity continues its complex relationship with Gaea, a vast sentient space habitat orbiting Saturn. The story follows multiple characters, including a ship captain dealing with psychological trauma who seeks healing within Gaea's bizarre and often dangerous ecosystems, and a film crew hoping to document the wonders of this living world. As they navigate Gaea's increasingly unpredictable nature, they discover that the god-like entity controlling this wheel-shaped habitat has grown more capricious and dangerous since their last encounter. Varley crafts a richly imaginative universe where biological engineering meets mythology, and where the line between ally and threat constantly shifts. The novel explores themes of identity, healing, sexuality, and the price of dealing with powers beyond human comprehension. Gaea herself has become obsessed with old Hollywood films and human culture, leading to surreal encounters that blend high-concept science fiction with darkly comic elements. What makes this book particularly appealing is Varley's willingness to push boundaries while maintaining emotional depth in his characters. The novel combines hard science fiction concepts with vivid world-building, creating an alien environment that feels genuinely strange yet meticulously thought-out. Readers who appreciate character-driven stories set against truly original science fiction backdrops will find much to enjoy, though the novel's mature themes and complex narrative make it best suited for adventurous readers.
