About The Picture of Dorian Gray

AI-generated

Oscar Wilde's only novel is a Gothic masterpiece that explores the corrupting influence of vanity and hedonism in Victorian London. When the young and beautiful Dorian Gray sits for a portrait, he makes a fateful wish: that the painting would age instead of him, allowing him to preserve his youth and beauty forever. As his wish comes true, Dorian embarks on a life of increasingly reckless pleasure-seeking under the influence of the cynical Lord Henry Wotton, while his portrait becomes a hideous record of his moral decay. This darkly elegant tale examines timeless themes of aestheticism, morality, and the relationship between art and life. Wilde's razor-sharp wit punctuates a narrative that questions whether beauty can exist without consequence and whether we can escape the marks our choices leave upon our souls. The novel remains deeply relevant in its exploration of image versus reality, the price of eternal youth, and society's superficial values. Wilde's gorgeous prose and provocative philosophical ideas make this a compelling read that operates as both an entertaining Gothic thriller and a profound meditation on the nature of conscience, corruption, and the human capacity for self-deception.

“I hate vulgar realism in literature. The man who could call a spade a spade should be compelled to use one. It is the only thing he is fit for.” - thought it was ok, I liked the themes and faggotry but just a little overwritten and way too many monologues. V self absorbed and a little classist The content is no longer particularly shocking by modern standards, this book did well off shocking Victorian sensibilities but doesn’t hold up against the test of time
