City of Ashes

In this second installment of The Mortal Instruments series, Clary Fray is still reeling from the shocking revelations about her family when a new threat emerges in New York City. Valentine, now in possession of the Mortal Cup, begins his campaign to create an army of Shadowhunters loyal to his twisted vision of ridding the world of Downworlders. As mysterious deaths plague the city and tensions escalate between the magical races, Clary must navigate not only the external dangers but also complicated relationships with Jace, whose connection to Valentine threatens to destroy him, and Simon, her best friend who's undergone his own supernatural transformation. Clare deepens the world-building of the Shadowhunter universe while exploring themes of identity, family loyalty, and the consequences of prejudice. The story examines what it means to forge your own path when you're haunted by your bloodline, and whether love can survive devastating secrets. With its blend of action-packed demon battles, political intrigue among the magical factions, and emotionally charged character dynamics, the book expands on everything readers loved about the first installment while raising the stakes considerably. Fans of urban fantasy with complex relationships, morally grey characters, and a richly developed supernatural New York will find themselves pulled deeper into this addictive series.
