About Nettle & Bone
AI-generatedNettle & Bone is a darkly enchanting fairy tale that follows Marra, a powerless second princess who must undertake three impossible tasks to save her sister from an abusive prince. Relegated to a convent while her older sisters make political marriages, Marra has spent her life on the sidelines of power. But when she witnesses her sister's suffering in a royal court that turns a blind eye to cruelty, she realizes no one else will act. To accomplish her desperate mission, she must complete seemingly insurmountable challenges: weave a cloak from nettles, build a dog from bones, and capture moonlight in a jar. T. Kingfisher weaves a subversive take on classic fairy tale tropes, populating Marra's quest with an unforgettable cast of allies including a cynical dust-wife who can raise the dead, a cursed ex-knight, a magical demon-possessed chicken, and the skeletal dog she brings to life. The novel explores themes of powerlessness, trauma, and the courage it takes to act when you've been taught your entire life that you don't matter. What begins as one woman's impossible quest becomes a found family story about ordinary people attempting extraordinary things. This is a fairy tale with teeth—darkly humorous, emotionally resonant, and refreshingly grounded despite its magical elements. Kingfisher balances moments of genuine horror and tension with warmth and wit, creating a story that appeals to readers who appreciate their fantasy with moral complexity, characters who feel real despite the fantastical setting, and heroism that comes from determination rather than destiny.

Nettle & Bone is what happens when all the overlooked bit players of classic fantasy somehow wind up on the main quest. Exactly this. This fairytale has just enough creepiness to feel old and worn. It's a tale of courts and witches and a quest to kill a prince.Premise: Marra's two sisters are married away to an abusive prince. First the eldest (RIP) . Then the second. Marra's a bit too young and naive to understand the truth and the politics when she is sent away to a convent, basically in reserve. After 15 years and few visits to her sister, Marra finally learns, understands, and wants vengeance. So she seeks it. She travels south to find the woman who can help her murder the prince. The powerful gravewitch, the dust-wife, assigns her 3 impossible tasks. We start the story with Marra making a bonedog in a wasteland of dirt and cannibals, the 2nd of her 3 tasks. To the dust-wife's dismay, Marra completes the impossible tasks. And so they begin the journey to the prince's kingdom with goal but without a plan. As they adventure north, they collect more people until they are complete: a nun princess, a powerful gravewitch, a demon-containing chicken, a glamoured bonedog named bonedog, an exiled soldier, and a sweet but potentially dark fairy godmother.
